TikTok Launches Support Initiative to Help Those Struggling with Eating Disorders

TikTok is joining forces with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and National Alliance for Eating Disorders to launch a new National Eating Disorder Awareness Week support initiative. This week-long event will highlight critical information, resources, and tools to help those struggling with eating-related issues and provide guidance to users at risk of developing an eating disorder.

To help promote National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, TikTok is rolling out special in-app alerts. These alerts will provide more information and helpful links to NEDA and the Alliance's life-saving resources. These resources include advice on supporting a loved one with an eating disorder and access to confidential organization helplines and treatment options.

In addition to the in-app alerts, TikTok is also partnering with various creators to share their experiences and recovery journeys. These creators can use the hashtag #ItsTimeforChange to share their stories, and further help spread awareness of eating disorders.

Eating disorders are a serious mental health issue affecting millions of people worldwide. According to NEDA, about 28.8 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder, and the majority of cases involve people between the ages of 12 and 25. For this reason, it's important for social media platforms like TikTok to provide support and guidance to at-risk users and those already struggling with an eating disorder.

TikTok is committed to keeping its users safe and has created several initiatives to help support those suffering from an eating disorder. To ensure users are kept safe, TikTok does not allow content that promotes or normalizes eating disorders or disordered eating. The platform also redirects searches for phrases related to eating disorders to the National Eating Disorders Association’s Helpline and its own disordered eating guide in its Safety Center.

With the launch of this new support initiative, TikTok is making an effort to do its part in helping those struggling with eating disorders. The platform hopes this event will help spread awareness and support and encourage users to seek help.
