Embracer Group: Navigating Success and Challenges in the Gaming Landscape
- 17-02-2025

The Swedish gaming powerhouse, Embracer Group, has encountered a combination of successes and challenges as the year unfolds. The release of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II has been a monumental success, receiving widespread acclaim from both gamers and reviewers. Within just 24 hours, it sold nearly two million copies and reached over 250,000 simultaneous players on Steam. This achievement has revitalized the company's outlook, reinforcing their long-standing strategy and dedication to producing high-quality games.
However, challenges persist. Early February brought news of Asmodee’s departure from the group, a subsidiary known for its expertise in card games, including the French edition of Pokémon TCG, and popular board games like Catan. Having been acquired in 2022 for over two billion euros, their tenure lasted nearly three years, ultimately leading to an operation that did not yield substantial profits.
Moreover, Embracer concluded the year with The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, an epic project that fell short of success. Though some viewers enjoyed the anime adaptation, it fell short of the lofty standards established by the franchise, which Asmodee had also previously engaged with.
In spite of these green shoots, the recent news echoes the numerous studio closures and spin-offs that have characterized the last five years for Embracer. The company, which made a notable entrance into the industry before the pandemic, boasted five divisions and 26 studios in its portfolio, and has even announced a staggering number of 118 titles currently in development.
