Garry's Mod Celebrates Over 25 Million Sales Milestone Amidst Controversies and New Projects

Garry's Mod has achieved remarkable sales figures, with over 25.4 million copies sold in its 18-year history, as reported by Facepunch Studios.
Initially launched on PC through Steam in 2006, Garry's Mod has gained immense popularity, reaching a total of 25,560,290 units sold. Designer Garry Newman shared his surprise over this achievement, reflecting on his initial hesitation when Valve proposed selling the game. He expressed his disbelief at the time, pondering who might actually pay to that point. Jump ahead to the present, and it seems many players have proven him pleasantly mistaken.
In September, Garry's Mod was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the highest-selling PC exclusive of all time, surpassing the likes of World of Warcraft and other expansions. Newman humorously remarked on his unexpected status as a record holder, contrasting it with the typical achievements associated with snacking on prawn cocktail crisps.
Garry's Mod allows players to experiment with models from various Valve games developed on the Source engine. Its lasting appeal has allowed it to maintain a position among Steam’s top 100 most-played games for several years. In July, Newman faced a surprising DMCA request from the creators of Skibidi Toilet, a situation that produced some ironic twists. Despite this challenge, an account claiming to be from the Skibidi Toilet creator later asserted that they were not responsible for the claim, and Newman reported that the issue was resolved.
The DMCA letter was attributed to Invisible Narratives, a production studio collaborating with Michael Bay on a Skibidi Toilet film. The letter referenced several characters associated with their brand, indicating that these characters were protected by copyright. Notably, a public catalog search corroborated Invisible Narratives' claims regarding Titan Cameraman and several unpublished works.
The letter also mentioned concerns about significant revenue being generated by unauthorized Garry's Mod games featuring Skibidi Toilet content. Newman humorously questioned the irony of the situation, given that Skibidi Toilet largely uses assets from Half-Life 2, originally made in Garry's Mod.
Earlier this year, Facepunch decided to eliminate all content associated with Nintendo content from Garry's Mod, which had accumulated over two decades, following a takedown request from Nintendo. Currently, Newman is focusing on creating a new project named S&box, which is set to be a successor to Garry's Mod.
